Old friends and new

Time to reorganise my old faithful pastel box – my first pastel workshop is on Saturday morning. During the teaching term pastels get thrown about and mixed up. A dust off, regroup-by-colour, and crumbs swept out is what’s needed urgently!

There are some new students starting Saturday, with some familiar faces returning. We share laughs, coffee & chocolate whilst painting, with most going home proudly with a finished painting.  Weekend workshops and weekly classes are enrolling now, drop me a line if you’d like to join us!

Below are some students and their work from late last year. Click on an image below to view it larger.

And a big Thank You for all your well wishes. Treatment is well under way and today my physiotherapist said he’d never heard “squealy” used as an adjective for his therapy before. But he likes it

I love the photo of your pastel box!

Good luck with your ‘squealy’ treatment. Hope it helps.

What a super talented bunch of students you have Cindy (must be the teacher). There were a couple I couldn’t enlarge, like the one in the top right hand corner, which I would have liked to have seen a close up of. They are all doing amazing jobs – hope all goes well at your workshop tomorrow!!! :)

Hi Cindy, What pastels do you use the most? Do you have a preference? I can see a few Rembrandts in your collection.
Hope your injury is better before classes start!

Those are well loved pastels and they have helped produce some amazing art. You have such talented students and I’m sure this round is going to be just as amazing. have fun and good luck on that pastel clean up!

    Thanks everyone!

Kathleen, these are just the top 2 drawers of my psatel box – there’s another 75% of my pastels not shown and need attention before the workshop tomorrow. Listen out for more squeals this afternoon….

Marie, collecting art supplies is my weakness…I can always justify new ones though! Good luck with your classes this year as well.

Diane, everyone can paint – I just help draw it out (no pun intended!)

Fran, the physio reckons you’ll be able to hear me from several suburbs away. I need a bullet to bite down on or something. And yes I love used art boxes, palettes etc. I think there is nothing sadder than a pristine set of paints waiting to be used.

Karen, sorry about that – I’m not really good with too much HTML, trying to get all the pics aligned was a challenge in istself – I think that’s where the enlarging thing goes awry. I may go back and just insert them full size into the post. LOTS of chocolate ready for tomorrow!

Elaine, I use mainly 3 types, a hard, medium & soft (even though they say they are all soft pastels). Rembrandts are the hardest, Art Spectrum are medium (great for Aussie landscape colours), and Schminke for the final touches as they are whipped cream soft. Pastel Pencils, Derwent & Carbothello, are great for detail.

Bren, yes they are much loved. I have some favourite ones that have long since lost their labels, and are now just tiny fragments, but I still use them. Some people grind them up, mix with a little water and make new pastels out of them. I might give it a go.

I’m excited about your classes starting just because I am always shockingly amazed at how talented your students are–or how well you teach, I should say. ;)

Good luck with the cleaning out old faithful and your therapy! Can hardly wait to see pictures of the class! :)

Can I come too? About to start a pastel portrait myself, but sounds much more fun doing it with your lot. Long way to commute though (Sydney). Oh well, ho hum. Have fun guys. Rosa xx

what a great photo of some of your pastel trays
what fun your students must have getting to choose from so many colours

Rita, they are a lovely bunch to teach, and so enthusiastic. It’s going to be a stinking hot day tomorrow, so I’m sure we’ll be looking a little hot and bothered, with melted chocolate all over us as well as pastel!

Rosa! How are you?? Would love to see what you do with a pastel portrait. Have you been painting lots?
Yes, the commute could be a little wearying…..

Kel, I try and keep my long sticks in the pastel trays, otherwise I use the little trays you get with pre-packaged meals (My son is a convenience curry fiend at times!) I must try and get a photo of all the pastels together. Wide angle lense required I think……

All those people are soooo talented. Wow!
