Start ‘em young
Last night we attended the Angelico Exhibition opening night in the city. Artists are selected secondary school students from all over the state.
Jez really had to push his own boundaries with this piece – the largest he’s ever done as well as being a self-portrait. A while back I photographed the art students at his school under dramatic stage lighting. From these they painted self portraits. Jez’s piece was selected for the exhibition.
There are some amazing pieces created by such talented artists who happen to be high school students. Everything from puppets, books, clothing, huge sculptures and evocative paintings and drawings. If you get a chance, pop in and have a look.
Exhibition until Friday 27th August 2010, Foyer, Forrest Centre, 221 St George’s Tce, Perth.
Meanwhile, I’m dancing with the brushes again – Work In Progress report:
Orange underwash to lay down my tonal blocks.
Watercolour effects are possible with acrylic and canvas.
I keep my reference photos standing upright in a perspex display stand – one way to keep the paint splatters off them!

By golly Jez is talented – I’m sure we’ll be seeing him in the Archibald in the not too distant future. This self portrait should go in the Archibald – it is OUTSTANDING!!!!!!! love the progress of your new painting – the colours look gorgeous.
Stunning piece of work! That young man of yours has talent plus, I love the unique, fresh way he each of the images on that huge canvas! You must be very proud of him, he’s an artistic voice to be reckoned with.
I’m looking at that underwashing and can’t wait to see this develop, love your idea for holding your reference photos, I’ve never seen that anywhere. It’s fun to have a glimpse into your studio, thanks for sharing.
PS: Cindy, I will take whatever help I can get when it comes to learning Photoshop, so if you have notes that can be emailed, I’d appreciate
Thanks Karen and Brenda,
Karen, I’ll pass on the message to Jez, he’ll really appreciate it.
Brenda, For Jez, it’s skateboarding & drawing, his 2 passions in life! Ill dig around and send those files onto you.
He’s certainly got the talent your Jez! Wonderful self portrait. And your big brush work is going great, it will be strange to return to the small, detailed work after that big passionate stuff….
re the clean-up, thanks for your comment – all the really big stuff was weighed by crane (500 kg truck tyres!) and some of the sorting had to be done by sorting a representative sample and then extrapolating – unfortunately the volunteers fade away after the initial fun of collecting the stuff, understandable really. I’m the dork in the shorts and black T-shirt, and my boss did the filming – her first time, so it wasn’t too bad!
I can certainly understand “fading away” in Top End humidty!
I’ll have to go back and check out your video again!
Thanks for stopping by.
