Dragonfly Divebombers
I’ve noticed in the last few weeks that the Dragonflies in our garden have become super territorial. They have always chased away any dragonfly intruders, but now they are telling us, and the cat & dog, that the backyard is THEIR domain and we’d better keep our distance from THEIR chosen spot. (Pretty much anywhere near the pool).
No longer are they happy to sit still on a leaf or twig, now they are constantly on the wing and in your face if you venture too close. I thought I’d try and capture these flying jewels with my camera – much easier said than done!
Look you far square in the eye they do, that glittering head swiveling to follow your every move.
Bling in the backyard – beautiful.

Fantastic shots, the first one he looks like a helicopter! and that third one down, I swear it looks like he’s giving you the evil eye
Your last shot is magic, the translucent quality against the black, beautiful
I was frightened by a dragonfly once – in Hawaii – it was the biggest thing I’d ever seen and came inside the open window of our car and out again almost immediately, but it was a shock! I can see they would be menacing, if they want to be…but so beautiful and you’ve captured them well.
My goodness you must have a powerful camera Cindy – the photographs you take of wildlife, including these dragonflies are always amazing, and I love the narration that goes with your photos – entertaining as always!!!

I like the Bling…….just had an email from a friend of my Mum’s – she lives at Seacliff Park here in SA – she had a carpet python in her garden (still waiting to here how she got rid of it)
Made me think of you – sent her a link to the newpaper article…
How have you been – busy by the look of things…..
Cheers….Kim
Bling in the backyard is a great description…you have done well I have not managed to photograph one on the wing…they are so erratic with their movements….except when trying to draft you away from their territory….:)))
Thanks Karen, Kim & Liz,
I’ve been out of action for a while and really appreciate you stopping by.
Hope your time aways was for pleasure and not due to ill-health or misfortune. Your photography skills (not to mention your camera) are stunning. I KNEW there was a reason to be afraid of these bugs my whole life!!! …they swivel their head and follow your every move – YIKES. I think I will carry a heavy duty fly swatter with me from now on – I live in central North Carolina (USA) and it is pretty hot this year – mid 90′s this week was the norm. Love the moon pics as well.
