Painting with Pastels

  pastel-workshop1.jpg

Yesterday I took part in a Pastel workshop which was just magic. Having only painted one pastel piece previously, I was a sponge ready to soak up any knowledge in this medium, along with the other 10 eager participants.

After only a few  short hours, we all had pieces we were happy to take home. Mine (top), is still a work in progess, but is mostly done. That’s the tricky part, knowing when to stop and not overwork a piece.

The generosity of spirit and knowledge from other artists always humbles me. Of course you will come across those who wish to keep all their tips and working methods Top Secret, but the majority of  professional artists are only too happy to share what they’ve learnt with you. They can distill a lifetime of successes and mistakes into a workshop that will steer you along the right path. I really do admire them.

If that is your painting…I love the cleanliness and the light you have conveyed. You are a talent and an uplifting positive sort of gal …:))

Cindy I need to pick your brains regarding printing postcards….to answer your question no I have not been selling postcards in the past months…I have sold hundreds but have been some months without a printer…so have not had any available….I will put up for a short time on my blog the last design and tell me what you think…was done six months ago and the new camera with the L lens’s has sharper images than the kit lens.

Oh my goodness that is amazing!!! It does indeed look just like a photo. You are very talented! I love working with pastels but really hate the way it feels afterwards, I am scared it is going to rub off on something…must take a workshop soon,
Love love love your work, thanks for sharing!

Wow it is great. Love how real the footprints look. The colours are so relaxing too.

You’ve done an amazing job in pastel, I honestly thought it was a photograph and was struck by it’s appeal, light and shadow.
    Wonderful work.

    Hi everyone,

Elizabeth, yep, top one is mine – after seeing it on the screen I’ve realised the horizon is as straight as a dog’s hind leg….will ring you about print options. WorldWide has very good prices.

Linda, I hate the way pastels feel during AND after! The dust gets everywhere! I only had to look at the footprints I left behind on the carpet….Highly recommend any workshop you can get to.

Diane, I would never have chosen those colours – that’s what’s so great about workshops – sharing all that accumulated knowledge.

Brenda, ah that elusive light! It’s becoming an obsession with me I think, especially backlighting. I just can’t get enough.

My goodness you are talented Cindy – did you really complete that in one session – WOW!!! I would have found all those footprints completely overwhelming. Your painting is stunning!!!

Karen, I am amazed at the speed of pastels. It is such a direct method of working, getting your fingers in there to blend etc. In fact the poor teacher rubbed off her fingerprints and left some blood on the board!

I would have found it overwhelming if we hadn’t been taken through step by step. Once it’s broken down into bite size pieces, it wasn’t so daunting.

I’m baaaack! Well, briefly, maybe…. What a fabulous pastel, I am in awe of the talent. The others weren’t bad either! Glad to see your enthusiasm and energy for your wonderful art continues.

How wonderful!!! Tazar is back! I’ve been over to your blog and it’s sooo nice to read about your adventures again. You can keep that humidity & the crocs to yourself though!

I’ve actually been thinking about you this week as the Today show are up in the Top End – you may see them about the place looking all touristy.

    I’m so glad you’re back.

This is a beautiful piece! I love the blues, the light in the grass and the shadows in the sand. I would imagine sand is difficult to get right with all those footprints, but you did a great job! I can almost smell the sea…
