Laura,

Yes we've had the cat drag in a baby Dugite or two. We thought she had a rubber snake until we saw it move! Unfortunatley they are deadly snakes - my sister's horse got bitten on the nose and died within 5 minutes.

At least pythons aren't venomous - they just sneak up on you by surprise!

Oh my goodness! I'm reading this snake post late at night and I'm hoping not to have snake dreams when I finally do go to bed. I can't even tell you how freaked out I'd be if we had pythons here (Columbia, Missouri USA). A couple of years ago, we had a garden snake in our house-I suspect the cat brought it in. I thought I was so brave for sweeping it up into a dust pan and tossing it outside. Your story makes me seem like a wimp! :)

Michele, now THAT is something I'd like to see! I can totally understand the persisting nightmares. You and Indiana Jones share a common hate.

ELizabeth, yes, jumping was the order of the day....

Oh, my God....that would do me in. I HATE snakes. I have a pathological fear of them and they, sensing this, love me. They come from everywhere to where I am, to visit, to chat, to drive me crackerdog. In Nepal I had a six foot King cobra rise up alongside me on a trail. That was twenty years ago and I still have nightmares about it. Gak!

Hey Jennifer,

We weren't short on the adders either! - Look what we caught in a bucket (for release where people wouldn't tread on it) here: http://www.artistsblog.com.au/2009/01/29/soft-cute-cuddly/

Next time you go trail walking, take your camera and bucket!

you can get Adders here, but I haven't seen any. There are probably some around if I went walking up in the trails, lots of rabbits to eat :p but they are hard to find

Hi everyone,

Nice to see some new faces and some not-so-new (I wasn't going to say "old"!)

Jennifer Rose, are no there snakes at all in your part of Scotland? (Did St Pat visit there as well?)

Diane, yep, FNQ strikes again. Isn't it funny that some people have lived in Cairns for years without ever seeing a python and we couldn't get the pesky things out of our garden!

Jenny I do love your visitor, We have foxes here in droves - they cross the road from the beach and river at night and seem quite bold. At least they put a dent in the rabbit population.

Sharon, it's the unexpectedness of where they'll be next that makes you jump. Once you know where they are it's a little bit less frightening. Maybe not for the cat.

Bill, it's the imaginary canetoads we keep seeing everywhere! Leaves blowing around at night especially. You expect to see them flattened on the roads at night. FNQ has scarred us all mentally in one way or another!
