Found this skullĀ at Clifton Beach recently.

I’m assuming it’s a fish of some kind.

Anyone have any idea? (I bet Tazar does)

UPDATE FEBRAURY 2010

Well, the mystery has been solved - Boffins at Murdoch Uni have declared it a BATFISH (see this post for my photo)

Snap Doda! I was just commenting on your blog.

It’s just before 7pm here - quite a few hours till bedtime yet! The sun has set but the cheeky birds are still about looking at me through the windows for a last minute snack. They’ll follow me around the house if I don’t give it to them either.

Aaww gee, I dunno… looks more like a bird than a fish. Maybe a cassowary skull?

  4. Artoholic Cindy, 18. February 2009, 22:32

Nah, a Cassowary skull has a straight up vertical horn, with a long beak out front.

I found a fossilised small skull a while back as well. No one is quite sure what type of creature that is either.

    Maybe your Bloke might know?

Maybe a turtle. Thanks for your comment. Now the troops have gone back to cold old London we may slow down on the posh meals. They were lovely meals but very expensive. Lucky we weren’t paying….payback time again…one advantage of growing old and poor.

I have no idea ! not much help am I?

Sounds like you are having ‘virtual’ blogging - its cool when that happens…..

I have a workmate friend who I chat to on facebook (because chatting is frowned upon at work) sometimes we are online together - then we head off and challenge each other to games there - AND I dont even have to leave the washing machine!!!!

From the side view look like a turtle skull but do not think it is as the top view does not match their skulls which are solid bone and do not seem to have the bumps and ridgeways apparent in your skull. Dunno

Well after reading all the comments I have no idea myself….Great help aren`t i…lol…
Looking at it first off I thought it looked like a birds skull also…

How`s the food situation going where you are Cindy….The floods have been headline news here the past few days….Some rather irrate people up in the top end which is understandable….

have you tried the local fisheries department or natural history museum? The museum here is pretty cool, I could ask them if you like.

I have no idea what it is….The consesus (huh) in the office is that it could be a bird, but now have no clue. I will say some type of turtle. Is the food getting through to you yet. talking about ants, every day I come home they are everywhere. I cant seem to ant proof my home.

sorry i can’t hazard a guess. doesn’t look like a bird or a fish. i hope someone can shine a light and if you do find out share. hope all is well with you and yours. Fran

Thanks everyone for your “thinking caps”.

It’s not a turtle or a bird, but a fish that was most probably someone’s dinner on a beach BBQ! Maybe Barra, Spanish Mackerel, or even Wrasse? Apparently it is a bumper fishing weekend up here, and the minimum makerel size is 75cm.

    Fancy fish ‘n chips anyone?

Hi there! We just found exactly the same kind of skull in Albany, Western Australia at a rivermouth. We googled imaged to come up with your blog. We’d love to know what it is, obviously not an emu, a moa or a pteradactyl … maybe a mulloway (but they have teeth) We found it a few days ago and have been puzzling ever since. Send me an email if you like …. cheers, Sarah

I have found same kind of skull today in Italy! I was searching for help in Internet and I have found your skull. They are really similar, but I have no idea! Tomorrow I will show it at the zoological museum in Rome. I will let you know!

Yesterday I have found an identical skull on a beach in Tuscany (Italy).
I have searched in Internet for a similar one and I have found only your pictures.
Today I have sent the pictures of the skull I have found to a zoological museum in Rome. I am waiting for an answer. I am really curious! I will share the information once I will have the answer!

    Bye!

I am so proud. I solved the mystery. Took 10 minutes or so.

This is a spiny scorpionfish. Particular fish first discovered by an icthyologist named Fowler from offshore fishermen off the Coast of New Jersey, and named in honor of author and sportsman Ernest Hemingway. Scientific name is neomerinthe hemingwayi.

Here is another website with this skull

It certainly looks unusual, at first i though that it was a platypus, but then i saw the other angles of it, and read down the comment line. it could be a very Deep sea/ ocean fish, eel or something else. i downloaded the pictures and will ask my friends. hopefully they might be able to help.

Only a year late in the conversation, it looks a bit like a snapper skull (missing the teeth).
