Old Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard is even barer
Yesterday was a miserable day, with my head being crushed whilst “driving the porcelain bus” (luckily the Gree Tree Frog has moved out!). I was convinced that I had Dengue Fever. Today, a rapid recovery - obviously not Dengue, and therefore no more sympathy.
Off to the Supermarket. A waste of time really.
No meat,
No yoghurt,
No frozen veg either. I did notice that they had some fresh potatoes left. They are occupying the space the bananas and other fruit used to.
However, if you are a Spectacled Bat, then the Beach Almond trees out the front of our house are all the sustenance you need. These guys were out very early in the evening (they usually appear after dusk), due to all the rain I think. (sorry the photos are pretty grainy as there wasn’t much light)
There was another one of him having a rather large widdle, but obviously too much in bad taste to post (and blurry!).
So we are still cut off from the rest of the country. I spoke to the Post Office today. No parcels coming IN or OUT of Cairns for the last 2 weeks, and maybe a couple more. Lots of red tape involved - if the “No Dangerous Goods” sticker is not signed (as for all Road and Rail items), they cannot be loaded on a plane and flown out.
A last note - my heart goes out to all the people and animals involved in the tragic fires down south. It is so so sad, and hopefully the rest of us can chip in and help where we can. Every little bit counts.

Well I guess it makes for a quick shopping trip when there are no goods to choose.
It is reassuring to know that you always have enough chocolate stockpiled to feed an army so I know you won’t waste away. Chocolate and fresh local produce sounds like a good enough diet to me. And there is obviously no shortage of water to drink with your meal!
For all the discomfort you may be suffering it pales in comparison to those poor people in Victoria who have lost so much. One can only hope they all find the strength to pull through and rebuild their lives.
Hope you all dry out soon.
Hey Tamara,
We are down to grapes and unripe mangoes with regards to the fresh produce. One good thing is that they are stocking Atherton Tablelands eggs now (the only choice offered).
I scored with the last carton of bacon being opened as I got to the store. Bacon & eggs for tea tonight.
It is so so sad with the devastation in Victoria. We sit and watch and stare in disbelief. How can so many be dead? How? Spare a thought for the fireman, police & army going in with the sole purpose of body retrieval. When you sign up for the services, do you think you would be doing this? Made of Strong Stuff. Now the RSPCA are struggling to cope as well. It all so overwhelming. I cannot stop thinking about them all.
Hi,
yes, lack of variety in the supermarket does kind of pale into insignificance. We were watching the news last night - just terrible. And to think that there may have been arsonists involved - just sick. That’s what the news was suggesting over here anyway.
Our thoughts are with you all over there.
Hope you get food through soon though.
(And that bat was cute)
Hi there
hope you are much better now. The Victoria thing sort of makes everything else fade doesn’t it? I have had tears every night now for days watching the unfolding horror. It is a disaster. How could so many die? It is times like this when the 24/7 news coverage becomes just too much, sometimes to just not know may be better. I had a misspent youth in many of those places, Kinglake, St Andrews. I just give thanks that the remainder of my family have ben spared so far.
[…] Sephy told me to make sure to get one with DEET in it. Note to Sephy - all those ones smell somewhat like a chemical warfare potpourri. With a squeeze of lemon! So I will smell bad, in case you all happen to be there and meet me or anything. Also, Cairns has no food in the supermarkets. Cindy from Artistsblog is up there, and has been writing some very interesting posts like this one. […]
i agree about the fires. truly tragic. the police are closing in on the culprits it seems, let’s hope so. yes, the bat is sort of cute, better than a snake at least. hope your situation improves very soon, those supermarket shelves look a bit sad.
Hi guys,
The tragedy keeps unfolding every minute. It is hard to get it round my head that 300 could be dead. 300. That’s like a war casualty figure. I still keep asking how?
Doda, they thik they are closing in on someone that started fires a few days before the Saturday inferno. Our Prime Minister has called these people “Mass Murderers”. It has stirred some strong sentiment.
Tazar, you grew up around there in Victoria? you must be feeling just awful. I hope all of your family are feeling safe.
I know I cannot watch a lot of the coverage anymore - it sort of seeps into your mind. A big wave of sadness just washes over me. Hearing the stories is just too much.
And thank you for your concern about my head. It’s almost stopped imploding now. It was the constant throwing up which was a real bugger.
Snos, BYO food, mozzie & croc repellant. Hopefully the roads will have reopened by the time you get to Ingham (although torrential rain is forecast tomorrow….) Dengue mozzies bite all day, and hang around houses only. WE are their food source. Just wonderful.
Fran, it’s unbelievable that some idiot in Adelaide was seen lighting 3 fires yesterday. I hope they catch him and give him “just rewards” for his efforts.
The bats pooh strips paint, so when they eat the fruit from our palms overhanging the deck, you gotta get in there quick smart. Did I mention they squeal like spoilt kids at night? At least it sort of drowns out the curlews and frogs…
I send my prayers & thoughts to all those people affected by the fires. My tears run down my face everytime I watch the news. It is like a magnet, you are drawn to the story and so want to help. I cant imagine all the livestock, pets that people have lost also.
I hope you get some food soon and tim tam offer is still open but I guess as you cant get mail……..
It really is a tragedy for Australia in more ways than one. On the one hand we have this terrible loss and on the other, we are in financial strife and can ill afford to pay out such vast amounts to victims but we must.
Interesting pictures about empty shelfs in supermarkets, something you only expected in eastern european countries. Hopefully things will get better soon.
I cant watch the news anymore….
I cant bare to even look at the yahoo page….
I cant look at the paper - well read the articles….
Now, my favourite radio talk back show has dedicated itself to the cause, have had to turn that off now…..
Its all so very, very sad (and confusing why someone would deliberately light a fire for starters - if that is the case)
So…. I sit here, with NO noise around me, almost looking forward to the tunes of ABC kids that will be ringing in my ears in the next hour….
I did catch the weather this morning - a big line of rain clouds visible - wishing it to head down south - you guys could dry out, the fires could be washed away….
Has the flooding subsided? The price of bananas down here has doubled, so I am guessing not - not that I am complaining, just passing comment…
Will appreciate my full Coles supermarket Friday - they are donating all their profits to the Fire Appeal.
Cheerier news…….I love the cute bats - I remember being amazed by their sheer numbers when we were there - the kids couldnt believe it - and the noise!!!
Good luck on the food front - stay dry !
It certainly has been a sad couple of days …I had to turn the news off because it was affecting me so much…I have family and friends there but thankfully they got out with their lives…They did lose everything though…It`s a black day indeed….I hope they catch the mongrels who did this….
Then you guys are suffering also….No food, just basics….The world has gone crazy all at once it seems….I hope you dry out soon up there….
Julie,
Too many tears by so many people. Tears of utter despair and hoplessness. But there are tears of joy and relief as well. Then the tears of the rest of the country. We are all crying it seems.
Thank you for your kind offer, but you know me, always choccies squirrelled away somewhere!
Bill,
Good to see you here. Your blog posts musthave been a hard thing to report on. Images and words all painting a picture of total destruction.
I am amzaed at the donations total so far - 37 million, from here and overseas. Thank god for the generous hearts of people everywhere.
Kim,
I am with you. I have reached the point where I can’t bear to hear/watch/absorb the horror anymore. It is so much to take in. The heartbreak of the lady who had to set her horses free, only to find out they had perished horribly. But I still find myself tuned in, buoyed whenever there is a happy ending - the man who found is cat Mousetrap had survived. And these are just the animal stories that have affected me! The human side means so much more.
Enjoy Coles for me. No bananas here…..only the unripe ones on my backyard tree.
Mandy,
It must be so much more painful for you, family and friends that you know and love. You must want to be there just for them.
It’s not just the mongrels who did this, but the ugly vultures who are now preying on the tragedy - pretending to be charities and stealing money from those who want to help. Anger and revulsion for those who would stoop so low.
It’s a wee bit drier today - I’ve actually go some sheets on the clothesline - a minor miracle. The clouds are gathering again though….
The bat pics are great but as cute as they look I don’t like them. The noise and the poohs. The super markets are scary to look at. A good time for loosing weight in Cairns. Hopefully you don’t go hungry.
Nice site, Will definitely come back again=)
