An Evening Update to…Cyclone Ellie - here so soon?

For those that read the this post earlier, I’ve added an update below the 2nd image.

I was up through the night, and as the rain and wind was so consistent, I kept checking the Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology website radar (love those guys!).

There was a HUGE swirling mass of rainclouds that just kept circling the Cairns region. It never seemed to move offshore/inshore, just around and around. I checked at 2am, 4am, 5am and throughout the early morning (I’m a weather obessive!). It was described as a “vigourous monsoonal tough with a tropical low”. Then right before my eyes, it changed from a low into Cylone Ellie just before 10am.

Looks like she’ll be here soon…

Never a dull moment up here in the VERY wet Tropics!

EVENING UPDATE:

Throughout the day the rain has been falling steadily, but not heavily - yet they are big fat drops that soak you through. It has been so dark today - like Twilight all day. BIG low clouds are forming a dense covering of the sky, obscuring mountains and even the normally very visible plane take offs and landings.

Around 6pm this evening we went to see what the winds had brought down so far. It’s sure going to be one helluva mess tomorrow if today was any indication.

All through the day cyclone warnings have been issued hourly on the telly. Quite a novelty for us first timers:

And with all the water comes the green tree frog that loves the heavy rain. At least this little guy isn’t waiting in ambush in the toilet bowl!

OOooh the water…hang in there…think of the crystal clear flowing creeks not the green mildew creeping up the walls….

Well that was quick to form and start moving. Been very wet here too but no cyclone as yet. The bloke is meant to go to sea tonight or tomorrow so he’ll have some lovely weather, not. I check that BOM website constantly too, especially the radar to see what rain is about to hit.

    They have that for Cairns:

Doesn’t seem to have the wind direction like the one for Darwin, but you can still get an idea of whether to hang the washing out or dust off the kayaks.

    Hi guys,

Yes, it was a quick one, no-one even mentioned the likelihood of a cyclone forming before the weekend.

The sky grew exceedingly drak at lunchtime yesterday - I even commented to Jeff how it looked like twilight, but at noon. Now we have big cloud banks that are huge semi-circles - looks really weird.

Elizabeth, the fungus is already rampant outside, but thanks to my A/C, everything inside is mould free at this time!

Tazar, I hope The Bloke likes it rough on the high seas!
I have the Cairns rain radar on the go all the time too - mine had the temps and wind direction, this is my link:

Everyone is panic buying at the shops again, however we did manage to get the essentials - Raspberry Chocolate Bullets.

I hope all is ok…will check out the BOM site, as I did last time….

Those people down south from you look like they are going to score another pounding, gee they would have just finished repairs from the last one….

I wont whinge about our weather any more….I have more sympathy for those of you up north!!!

Couldnt help but laugh when Gav mentioned on facebook that he was walking somewhere with booze last night, I mentioned the cyclone, and his comment was ‘what cyclone’ hahaha….saying he was in denial…..guess thats the tropical humour……

    Take care Cindy and Tazar!

Yup, this one sorta snuck up on everyone. Luckily we were spared damage and flooding, but I do feel for those poor sods a bit further down the track.

There is talk of her reforming - we’ll wait and see.

All blokes are in denial about everything aren’t they?
