Moonset and waterlillies before dawn

 lily.jpg

Wasn’t it bright last night? (For those of you lucky to have cloudless skies).

Too impossibly bright to sleep deeply, I thought I’d go into the garden to take some shots. The moon was about to set, and I positioned myself in a spot that wouldn’t arouse too much suspicion. A camera shutter going off outside your bedroom window is an unusual wake up alarm. Luckily our neighbour is in Machu Picchu at the moment.

It’s surprising how quick the moon dipped behind the mountain. Not quick enough to avoid the mozzies however. Shutter and slapping sounds echoing in the street.

Then the battery pack died. The moon was really hauling it’s behind, so I thought I’d never get into the house, fumble for the new battery pack, and get back outside before it set. With my sarong falling down, cursing as I ran over the pebbles in bare feet, I hightailed it in and out in less than a minute.

Just in time to see it dip down into the darkness. The golden glow it left behind was just so beautiful. Not enough light to show up in an image though, you’ll have to picture it’s gorgeousness in your mind.

There was a happy trade off,

    Hey Elizabeth,

No special equipment, just a fast shutter speed so no need for a tripod either.

    Settings were:

    250mm telephoto lense

    1/2500 shutter

    5.60 Aperture

Lonely lily was shot pre dawn.

    White Balance set at 3200K

    ISO cranked to 1600

A friend at uni is buying an extension tube for around $45. Currently I use my telephoto for my macros, but it’s a very poor substitute (focal length is ridiculous!) A Tamron lense is the alternative. Do you use a macro?

    Warm regards,

    Cindy

Wow, they are some cool photos. Has the moon inspired any paintings?

    Hi Cindy,
I tried with the moon last night before I read your specs…..will have another go tonight with your specs as a guideline. I do not have a macro lens. I use the Canon 18-55mm lens in the macro mode which I would imagine is not as good as the real deal. I do have a Tamron lens 70-300mm which I will try with the moon tonight. I did have my iso speed at 1600 but the photographs were not very good.
I want to take the moon large like your photographs and then try a little magic with colour……Here’s hoping although the cloud and wind is up today. I need to re read the literature with the camera but duh here can not locate the Canon booklet.
The more I look at the lilly photograph…it becomes increasingly beautiful

    Kind regards,
    Elizabeth

Good luck with the Moon tonight Elizabeth!

I need to take a panorama of the night sky showing the milky way for my next assignment (we learnt how to seamlessly “stitch” multiple photos together), so I think I’ll need to wait for the moon to wane away to nothing.

Instruction manual? Who needs them I say!

Hi Doda, thanks for stopping by.

I do feel more energised with the moon looming so large. It’s the sleeping that’s the hard bit -so bright it’s like daytime.

I have a date with the brushes and canvas tomorrow!

    Cheers

    Cindy
