Dr B’s Secret Passion
A visit to my Specialist (Dr B) is unlike any other Dr’s/Specialist’s visit. He could be a Stand Up Comic if he so chose. Dry, dry dry.
He is retiring (sort of), so I will not see him again, unless the old RA really goes wild. Today we talked about why he is retiring - so he can go fishing. And pursue his addiction to fly tying.
He thought he should look serious in this shot, which really freaked me out - not him at all. The walls of his practice are covered in trophies of his fishing exploits. His flies are rather wonderful. Wen I asked him if I could take photos of his flies, he giggled and said I was being naughty. “Oh, those flies!” he said.
Some of these are constructed from a single spine from a pheasant’s tail feather. Wool and other feathers are also dyed and used.
These flies are miniscule. (That’s Dr B’s finger). They are so life like, and sit on top of the water surface for unsuspecting trout.
The one he is pointing to is called a “Tup’s Indispensable”. I had to ask why. In England, a ram is also called a Tup (Dr B is English). The wool that is used for the fishing fly is from a Tup’s testicles. Tricky job shearing that wool.
Dr B with his collection of assorted bones.
He even showed me his Catfish battle scar today. I’ll miss him.

Cindy,
You will miss him…a friendly doctor with a kind face.
Cheers,
Elizabeth
I’ve only met him a very few times, but it seems like I’ve known him for years - that kind of easy-going, I-know-where-you’re-coming-from relationship.
He looks too young to retire, I s’pose being a Doctor he would have a good super by now.
Don’t get me wrong, I know they do many years of uni and deserve all they get.
It might be just as much fun making the fly’s as using them, or it is a good exuse to get away from it all for a while.
Yes, I think he looks young as he is young at heart. He did confess that he celebrated his “big number” birthday recently, and after a lengthy holiday in the UK and Europe (with miserable weather), he caught up with colleagues who had all retired and were pursuing long delayed passions.
He thought it was the right time to do so too. He will be still working 2 days per week, but at the hopistal - his own practice will be disolved. Only severe patients will get his attention now. So It’s good that I don’t have to see him, but sad too.
Hi Cindy….
How`s your blog in BB going??? Fixed yet?????
I`ve used Flies before and yes they are som intricute and very small…A very clever man….
Hope he does get to go fishing and do all the things he wants in his retirement….
Hi Mandy,
Bugblog? As with Grotty’s and Elizabeth’s, still broken. It’s a fault with their server. Who knows when or if they’ll ever fix it?
Hosky Kim is here and her hubbie is a State champion fisherman!
