Painting in Paradise
ArtEscape - a whole week of being tutored by Australia’s best artists in a tropical rainforest - just bliss on a stick!
The Red Bamboo Gate sits alongside the lower Tank where the Oil Painting classes are being held.
Before I could whip the camera out, glossy black scrub turkeys with their lipstick red heads ambled past the tank doors and back into the rainforest.
Some beautifully inspiring big brush watercolours are being created in a class right alongside my miniscule brush watercolour class.
I’m doing Paul Margocsy’s class again this year - he has such talent, you can’t believe your eyes as you watch him create a masterpiece before you.
Working on his trio of owlets painting.
The finished piece soon after.
After a day of observing, and more tomorrow morning, we are all itching to get stuck in ourselves. I’ll take in my desk top compressor tomorrow,as the huge compressor at the Tanks scares the beejeebies out of us when it repressurizes itself. Just gotta find mine tonight. I know it’s in a box somewhere….
I’m so tired, but so excited still. I feel so inspired by this man who realised his true passion, no matter how late in life. We talked about it for a while -my admiration for his work ethic and self motivation. He had a studio purpose built by Ronnie Burns (the Aussie Pop star of the 60’s), which he treats as a place of solid work from 8.30 to 4.30 every day.
Discipline. Self Discipline. I need to get me more of that!

Wow! What fun you are having. Good for you. You must feel on another plateau. I’m looking forward to seeing what you can produce after being inspired by such an artist. I must admit I haven’t heard of him. Is he from Cairns or just visiting for the classes? His piece on the 3 owls is lovely.
Sleep well. I’m back to work tomorrow after 2 weeks off. All the mum’s say hooray but I say Boooo! But need the money for our up coming trip to Europe in August. I’m starting to get excited.
The surrounds and environment certainly look to be very conducive to creative. Enjoy your week (not that you need to be told obviously…..)
I agree, the surroundings look just magnificent….I can feel your excitement right this minute…Hope you can sleep tonight….
Hi guys,
Thanks for stopping by.
Diane, he’s from Melbourne, and he’s been painting wildlife/birds seriously for the last 30 yrs or so. He’s ben invited to do artwork for various countries/organisations in the form of illustrating for stamps -a very presitigious thing in the art world. I bought a limited edition set last year, and he signed them for me today. I’ll get some photos tomorrow.
The artists are up here have been invited from all around Australia to tutor for the week - escape to the Tropics for the week and immerse yourself in learning.
Bad luck about school going back for you - just think of every hour working is more money for shopping! Whereabouts in Europe are you going? I’ve done the UK, but would really love to see the Continent one day.
Mandy, I’m soooo tired I can hardly keep my eyes open. I love Boston Legal on a Monday Night (TV tragic that I am), but might not make the distance.
I did find the compressor and the air brushes, the inks may be a bit on the dodgy side though.
I’m still recovering from having the Beast Serviced today AND a full tank of juice. That’s like an air fare to Bali….
Tim, I’m serious about that studio needing to be built! Have you ever built yourself a little hide away for recording or the like?
Hi Cindy,
Your enthusiasm and enjoyment is contagious and palatable…
Elizabeth
Red flowers so life-like..the shadows real
Cindy, that is in the “future plans” basket. Just no time at the moment for any construction activities.
Cindy, I am so impressed. You leave wide eyed enthusiasm in your wake - you just know how to show the best of your surroundings and your teachers.
Looks like an inspiring class in a beautiful setting. Who wouldn’t want to go to the tropics to teach and learn??? Those 3 little owls are great. Look forward to seeing what you end up doing after a full week of such inspiration!
You must be very busy creating, no time for blogging. Don’t forget Friday’s sketch tomorrow.
We pick up our tickets for the trip next thursday, so we are really getting excited now, We are doing north England, Scotland, River cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest then Switzerland. I will do a post on our itinerary when it gets closer to Aug 13th, departure day.
Wow the final product is amazing..the detail in the birds fluffy hairy heads…..
My daughter started school…….I’m telling EVERYONE….so is she…..
We are ALL very excited……didnt get much more done today, but its not going to take much getting used to!!!
Will pop back later to see your new post….
Hi everyone,
Sorry it’s taken soo long to get back to you. I’m still recovering after the intensity of last week. As you can see I’m slowly uploading all the images from the week.
So glad you all took the trouble to stop by - Maria, you found me! Welcome.
Cheers
Cindy
